Alex McCulla’s Big Day Paces Redbirds in Memphis
CORDOVA, Tenn. – Using a strong opening day by Alex McCulla, which has him tied for fifth place individually through 36 holes, and the Redbirds are in ninth place in a strong field at the Memphis Intercollegiate: Spirited by Old Dominick.
Tournament host Memphis leads the field after 36 holes with a 584, while 10th-ranked Illinois stands five strokes behind. Southern Miss (600), Samford (607), Austin Peay (607), Western Kentucky (611), Central Arkansas (612), and Dayton (612) sit just ahead of ISU's two-round 617. Chasing the Redbirds include Morehead State (620), Belmont (624), UT-Martin (635), Missouri State (636), Lindenwood (640), and Tennessee State (647).
Over the opening round, McCulla carded an even-par 72 with a trio of birdies and a dozen pars, before coming back with a 74 using five birdies and six pars for his two-over second round, which has him tied for fifth place with 18 holes to play.
Pietro Pontiggia is tied for 31st through 36 holes, and had an opening-round 76, which had three birdies and seven pars, before carding a second-round 78 with a birdie and 10 pars.
Max Faucquez opened his day with a six-over 78, as he had three birdies and nine pars. His second round saw him card a pair of birdies and nine pars for his 79, which has him tied for 51st.
TJ Barger had a pair of birdies and seven pars for his opening round 81, before following it up with an 82 – using three birdies and eight pars and is tied for 62nd. Will Troy had a birdie and seven pars over the first 18 holes and had a birdie and nine pars for his final-round 79.
The Redbirds tee off on Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. alongside Central Arkansas and Dayton on holes 8-10.
