About the Queering Horror film series
Queerness and LGBTQ+ individuals have been represented in horror films since the early years of cinema. These representations were complicated, with queerness often associated with disparaging humor, monstrosity or victimhood. Further, many queer horror actors, directors, and writers have intentionally added coded content for queer horror fans to notice and feel represented in the genre. Over the past decade, there has a been a surge in queer creators and characters openly representing the LGBTQ+ community in ways that are centered on authentic and complete representation. This series will highlight films throughout horror history that have been discussed within the context of queer representation, both the positive and the negative, providing an opportunity for community discussion on the ways in which films can represent and shape our understanding of ourselves and each other.
This series is curated by Dr. Eric Wesselman (Department of Psychology) and Dr. Gavin Weiser (Department of Educational Administration and Foundations).
