Men’s Golf Closes Play in Ohio
CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Illinois State men's golf team held its position from the end of the second round through the completion of the tournament, as the Redbirds placed 16th in a power-school-laden field, including five schools from the Big 12, and one more each from the ACC and SEC.
Aiden Cudney and Alex McCulla tied for the team-best score on the final day with each carding a two-over 73, while TJ Barger finished a stroke behind at 74.
The Redbirds return to the course for their third tournament of the season in West Lafayette, Indiana, as the Redbirds compete at the Purdue Fall Invitational, hosted at Purdue's Kampen Course on September 22 and 23.
Louisville was the team champion, carding a six-under 846 for the 54 holes, while tournament host Cincinnati finished second with an even-par 852. Kansas (855), BYU (858), Iowa State (860), Furman (860), Augusta (863), Middle Tennessee (867), Little Rock (867), Florida Gulf Coast (867), Kentucky (869), Sam Houston (872), UNCG (873), Memphis (873), and Chattanooga (879) all finished ahead of ISU's 884, while UCF (889) and Southern Miss (892) rounded out the schools in the field.
Cudney had the top individual placing in the tournament, as he tied for 36th with a 219. His final round saw him card two birdies and four bogeys, along with a dozen pars in his first collegiate tournament.
McCulla tied for 47th overall with a 220, and his final-round 73 had a team-best three birdies along with 11 pars for the round.
Barger's 74 had a birdie and 13 pars, and his nine-over 222 for the 54 holes is tied for 60th individually in the tournament.
Pietro Pontiggia shot a final-round 76 (+5) with 14 pars, as his 13-over 226 is tied for 81st.
Will Troy closed his tournament with a seven-over 78, and his three-round 228 is tied for the 88th in the field.
