Women’s Tennis Set To Host Redbird Invitational This Weekend
NORMAL, Ill. – For the second weekend in a row, the Illinois State women's tennis team will play host to a fall tournament at the Gregory Street Courts. This time, however, it will serve as a Missouri Valley Conference preview as each league team will come to Normal in what is set to be replacement for the MVC Individual Championships previously held every year by the conference.
The Redbird Invitational will take place Friday-Sunday, with each day set to begin at 9 a.m. The tournament will feature four flights of doubles play and seven flights of singles play, with the first round on Friday, the semifinals on Saturday and the finals on Sunday. Teams will start with the doubles flights each day, before moving into singles later in the day.
"We had a good showing last weekend at our hidden dual event and I'm excited for us to build on that and perform even better this weekend against MVC teams," ISU head coach Maja Kovacek said.
Last weekend at the Redbird Duals, the teams had to work around a weather day on the first day before finishing the weekend up on Sunday. The Redbirds picked up a win from the duo of Silvia Pomarolli and Nuria Sanz in the third and final round of doubles to cap off the weekend, and both players also picked up singles wins in the second round of singles. Also picking up singles wins in round two were Nicole Iosio and Sophie Marie Lowe. Sanz then capped of the day with her third victory in the third round of singles to round out a strong weekend of play.
Updated brackets will be posted following each day's action on the women's tennis schedule page on GoRedbirds.com.
