Illinois State University begins a new interdisciplinary data science bachelor’s degree program in the fall of this year. When the program’s inaugural cohort arrives on campus, Dr. Vishal Midha will be ready to teach them.   

Since 2017, Midha, a professor of business information systems, has been developing and teaching courses in forensic analytics that focus on applying data science techniques to detect fraud and financial irregularities. He will be teaching this same subject matter to his new data science students. 

“Forensic analytics represents an exciting intersection of data science and financial crime prevention and is an emerging field that leverages advanced data techniques to uncover patterns, identify anomalies, and support risk management in real-world business contexts,” Midha said.

A $3 million gift commitment from State Farm to support the recruitment and retention of data science faculty and students has been crucial to getting the program started. State Farm’s gift includes $1 million for faculty recruitment that can also be used to support equipment, research, and other needs related to data science. The remaining $2 million is slated to fund scholarships and promote the recruitment and retention of students from underserved populations.

Uniquely interdisciplinary, data science is a partnership between Health Sciences, Information Technology, Marketing, Mathematics, Politics and Government, and Sociology.

Midha took time to discuss what this new program will mean to Illinois State students who choose to pursue a bachelor’s degree in data science.

What is your definition of data science?

Data science is the process of turning raw data into meaningful insights that support smarter business decisions. It combines analytical thinking, statistical methods, and industry knowledge to identify trends, solve problems, and uncover hidden opportunities.

What was the impetus for starting the program?

There’s growing demand from the industry for professionals who can turn data into actionable business insights. As organizations increasingly rely on data to guide strategy, improve performance, and gain a competitive edge, there was a clear need for a program that prepares students to bridge the gap between data analysis and real-world decision-making. The goal was to develop talent that not only understands data but can also communicate its value and drive impact across organizational units.

What can prospective students expect to experience in the data science program?

Students can expect hands-on experience working with real datasets and industry case studies from various industries, including but not limited to finance, health care, retail, and technology sectors. The program focuses on practical applications, teaching students to translate data into strategic recommendations. Beyond technical skills, students develop crucial collaboration and communication abilities essential for conveying data insights to decision-makers.
