Preparations underway for WKCFA renovation project, sidewalk closure planned
Construction crews are working to prepare the southeast corner of the Quad for a two-year-long construction project that will update and add space to the Wonsook Kim College of Fine Arts (WKCFA).
The State of Illinois Capital Development Board (CDB) recently approved the $82,745,258.00 state-funded WKCFA transformation project to begin. The construction zone, including parking lots F-26 and the South University parking lot, was secured beginning October 27, 2025. Marked areas are expected to be inaccessible through December 31, 2027.
Pedestrian traffic, including individuals using the Constitution Trail traveling along Beaufort Street, will be rerouted for at least part of the construction project, starting Monday, November 3, 2025. As a part of the temporary traffic control permit issued by the Town of Normal, Illinois State University will appropriately mark the detoured route prior to the closure. Constitution Trail traffic will be rerouted using Fell Avenue and College Avenue. Another alternate route includes traveling north on University Street and then east on West Virginia Avenue to the Camelback Bridge trail entrance. Pedestrians using the South School Street sidewalk at the intersection of Beaufort Street will be directed to the Fell Avenue crosswalk.
WKCFA is comprised of multiple buildings, all owned and operated by Illinois State University. The CDB project’s scope includes the demolition of Centennial West, renovation to portions of the Center for Visual Arts and Centennial East, additions to the Center for Performing Arts and the Center for Visual Arts, and the new construction of a Commons Building in place of the original Centennial West.
Initially appropriated in Fiscal Year 2010, the project experienced many delays and re-appropriations over 15 years of planning. In May 2019, the Board of Trustees approved $15 million to renovate four locations on campus to serve as temporary space during the construction project. Students, faculty, and staff, relocated to those spaces in 2022 to minimize disruption with the demolition of Centennial West. Interior renovations in nearby buildings will take place over the summers of 2026 and 2027.
Plans for a groundbreaking ceremony are currently being finalized and will be shared with the campus community soon.
