Grounds crew plans controlled burns throughout month of March

Controlled open burning will be conducted by Illinois State University maintenance staff to manage vegetation on campus properties during the month of March, beginning over spring break.

Open Burn Notice – Illinois State University Environmental Health & Safety

Controlled open burning will be conducted by Illinois State University maintenance staff to manage vegetation on campus properties during the following dates:

  • March 10 – 14: Along the campus creek spanning from College Ave. & Adelaide St. to north of Gregory St.
  • March 17 – 21: Weibring Golf Club
  • March 24 – 28: ISU Horticulture Center

University staff apply for a burn permit from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to complete this controlled burn that begins during spring break and continues through the month of March, weather dependent.

During the scheduled burns, air quality will be actively monitored to ensure the impact to the community is minimized. Open burning will commence and cease as conditions warrant until all selected areas are effectively treated. Burning these identified sites helps to control weed seeds, small woody plants, rejuvenate the area and enhances wildlife habitat. Three to four grounds workers monitor the burn each day and are in contact with the Normal Fire Department, Illinois State University Police Department, and the Heating Plant to close off fresh air vents. All residents are advised to maintain an adequate safe distance from burn operations until all activity has ceased. Please direct any inquiries to Illinois State University Environmental Health and Safety at (309) 438-8325.
