Adaptive Edge faculty fellowship applications open
The Adaptive Edge Institute at Illinois State University was founded to help the campus community thrive in an era of rapid technological change. The Institute’s mission is to ensure that, as artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies reshape the world, the greatest opportunity lies in becoming more deeply human—by engaging thoughtfully and ethically with these tools. In that spirit, the Institute is launching the Adaptive Edge Faculty Fellowship for spring 2026, inviting tenure-line faculty from all disciplines to lead innovative projects that blend human creativity with the power of generative artificial intelligence.
The fellowship provides a 0.25 full-time equivalent course release, allowing the selected faculty member to focus on a project that supports both the Institute’s mission and the University’s strategic goals. The spring 2026 fellowship will focus on generative artificial intelligence, with the aim of encouraging creative, practical ideas that help students, faculty, and staff succeed in a changing academic environment.
Project areas
The Institute seeks proposals that use artificial intelligence to address campus needs or create new opportunities. Example project areas include the following:
- Using artificial intelligence to help more students succeed and reduce D, F, and withdrawal (DFW) rates
- Developing hands-on artificial intelligence workshops and resources for the campus community
- Strengthening secure local and cloud artificial intelligence infrastructure for Illinois State
Proposals should align with the institute’s mission and demonstrate campuswide benefit. Projects may extend faculty research, provided they show clear institutional impact.
Eligibility and expectations
The fellowship is open to tenure-line faculty who demonstrate curiosity about artificial intelligence and readiness to deliver meaningful outcomes within one semester. Deep technical expertise is not required. The selected fellow will participate in weekly meetings with institute staff, submit an end-of-fellowship report, and engage in campus communications.
Application process
