Central Catholic’s Valshun Powe fuels unbeaten run, commits to ISU
NORMAL, Ill. —Bloomington-Normal native Valshun Powe has taken the area’s high school football scene by storm. The dynamic athlete for Bloomington Central Catholic has been the driving force behind the Saints’ offense this season, delivering explosive performances that have helped lead his team to a perfect 7-0 record and a commanding spot in the conference race.
With the Saints off to a perfect start this season, Powe shared why he believes the team has had so much success.
“First off, it’s been the coaching,” Powe said. “All offseason, they got in our heads, motivated us to really want to win and to start the season off strong.”
For the Saints, Powe plays on both sides of the ball — offense and defense. Whether it’s at quarterback, running back or safety, Powe does whatever it takes to help his team win. He also shared how he keeps his body ready to handle the workload of playing both sides.
“The training staff helps me out a lot,” Powe said. “But for myself, I make sure I’m always stretching and staying loose. I also eat healthy, especially during the season — making sure I eat fruit, drink plenty of water and have Pedialyte to keep myself hydrated at all times.”
Back in July, Powe announced his commitment to Illinois State University. He shared what led him to make that decision.
“It being the hometown school was a big thing for sure,” Powe said. “Also, they let you be an athlete and play multiple positions, not just one. I’m really excited to be staying home and playing for the Redbirds next fall.”
With the Saints still undefeated and his future locked in at Illinois State, Powe’s story is far from finished. Powe and the Saints still have plenty of football left to play this season, with their eyes set on making a deep run in the playoffs.
