Student Government Elections to take place this week
NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State University’s Student Government Association will hold their yearly elections on Tuesday, March 4 and Wednesday, March 5. Links will be sent in a mass email to the student body shortly after the polls open on Tuesday.
Positions up for election include: the Student Trustee, President and Vice President for the Association of Residence Halls, President, Vice President and Chief of Staff for SGA, as well as 20 open seats for students senators of SGA.
SGA is the only official governing body for the university. Student Body President, Cobi Blair, mentioned that SGA’s job is to communicate to the administration of the university matters going on with students, student issues and to advocate for students
“Our job is to be the official representatives to what the students at ISU need and what issues they’re facing,” Blair said.
The SGA works on many projects to help benefit students. Some of their most recent initiatives have been educating greek organizations and RSO’s on campus about the fentanyl crisis, educating members of those organizations on how to use narcan and handing out drink testing strips to students to test for substances.
Blair also spoke about the weight each individual vote held last year.
“The votes matter. And I say that as someone who learned the hard way,” Blair said. “When I first ran for student government…I got 447 votes. My opponent [also] got 447 votes. We literally tied, so if one person would have changed their mind and voted differently, or if one [more] person chose to vote, that wouldn’t have happened,.”
Results of the election could be announced as soon as Wednesday night.
