COM Week returned to Illinois State University this year for the first time since 2023. COM Week gives students a chance to connect with professionals in the communication field. One of the featured speakers was ISU alum Steve Berger, a senior advertising and marketing executive with more than 40 years of experience.

Berger visited campus to talk with students about how to build a successful career in media, advertising and communication.

“I love speaking with students because they are the future,” Berger said. “The roots and foundations of my career began at this university, and I am in a position now where I can pay it forward.”

While he was a student at ISU, Berger was heavily involved in campus media, he encouraged students to get involved and gain as much hands on experience as they can.

“I loved it,” Berger said. “If you work there, you know what it is like to be part of a team and work together to accomplish something.”

One of Berger’s main messages was learning from failure.

“Experience leads to good decisions, but you need to make the bad decisions to get the experience,” he said. “It is okay to make mistakes, but you have to take responsibility for them.”

Berger closed his presentation with advice to students in any field. Telling them the importance of building relationships, being curious, internships, mentors, and always have fun.

Students who attended said they appreciated hearing real career advice from someone who once sat where they are now.
