Students and community members gathered at Illinois State University’s Center for the Visual Arts for the annual Take Back the Night march to raise awareness about sexual assault and promote campus safety.

Hosted by Students Ending Rape Culture (SERC) and the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program, the event began with a discussion about the march’s history and its mission to support survivors of sexual violence.

SERC member Lauren Bounds said the march helps raise awareness during the “Red Zone,” the period between August and November when most campus sexual assaults happen.

“Above all, awareness and community,” Bounds said. “It’s so important to talk about sexual assault, especially in the time we’re in.”

The organization also reflected on the 2022 assault of ISU student Jackai Martin, who was attacked and subjected to homophobic slurs at an off-campus party. Since then, SERC has worked to increase awareness of hate crimes and offer support to those affected.

Nikki Brauer said events like this can help survivors find their voices again.

“Folks that have gone through a traumatic event may feel like they can finally say it,” Brauer said. “It might help them shed a little bit of the shame.”

SERC continues to reach students through campus emails and social media, sharing updates about resources and upcoming events.

SERC’s next event will be held on Thursday, October 16, from 5 to 6 p.m. in McCormick Hall, Room 184.
