Illinois State University hosted the  “From Passion to Profession” panel in the Circus Room located at the Bone Student Center. The panel explored paths in policy advocacy and how students can begin to create change in topics they are passionate about. Advocacy leaders included those pertaining to democracy, reproductive rights, immigrant injustice, and climate change. Panelists noted that the most effective advocates are those that “know when they need to ask for help and seek out those who can fill the void that they may be missing in their leadership skills or the void that they need in their organization”. This was followed by the statement that “an effective advocate listens and figures out how to solve a problem in a way that everyone can meet their needs. Like people often think of advocacy and activism as speaking and persuading someone to care about what you care about but I think the most effective advocates find what others care about and connect to that”. Advocacy panelists left students with the encouragement to find their personal strengths and align them with the topics they are passionate about.
