The annual Chili Bowl rivalry took place on Friday night between Normal Community High School and Normal West high school.

The Ironmen entered the fourth quarter with a 17-14 advantage over the Wildcats, when quarterback Lucas Beaty found receiver Luke Potts open to extend the lead to 10.

West tried to close the gap on its next possession but defensive back Jalen Smith picked off quarterback Jrue Mangruem’s pass and returned it for a Community touchdown.

The Wildcats refused to give up on winning the Chili Bowl as returner Cody Muhlbauer took the kickoff back all the way to close the gap back to 10.

NCHS defeated West 35-22, NCHS head coach Jason Drengwitz praised his defense for overcoming the turnovers given up by his offense.

“Man our defense, we get a stop, get the ball back, turnover, back to work, and they made a stop again,” Drengwitz said.
