Illinois State football defeated Morehead State 41-13 for its 2025-26 home opener, the Redbirds struggled out the gate as the Eagles took over seven minutes off the clock, ending the opening drive with a 1-yard touchdown by Craig Cunningham.

ISU cut MSU’s advantage to 7-3 on a field goal by kicker Matt Maldonado and on its next offensive possession, quarterback Beckham Pellant delivered a 25-yard pass to receiver Daniel Sobkowicz to put the Redbirds in front 10-7.

ISU head coach Brock Spack’s defense was strong all night, especially in the second half with cornerback Shadwel Nkuba II intercepting Eagles quarterback Carter Cravens and linebacker Jamarcus Smith recovering the loose ball on back to back possessions.

Quarterback Tommy Rittenhouse and the Redbird offense took full advantage of the great field position as on the ensuing drive, Rittenhouse fired a 32-yard strike to receiver Luke Mailander for his first touchdown of his career.

ISU’s defense came up big to ice the game as defensive back Cam Wilson scooped up the loose ball and returned it all the way to extend the Redbirds’ lead.
