The Normal Police Department is launching new cruisers as part of a 10-year, $8 million upgrade with Axon Technologies. The plan includes modernizing the department’s equipment and digital tools to improve efficiency and safety.
Public Information Officer Brad Park said the upgrades will enhance what detectives and patrol officers can do in the field. “A lot of our digital needs, like data storage and technology, are being updated to strengthen our overall capabilities,” Park said.
The new cruisers include updated cameras, sirens, lights, and radios. The department will continue using some older vehicles as the new ones are phased in over time.
Park said the improvements go beyond new cars. Interview rooms and other technology systems will also be upgraded to help the department keep up with modern policing. “We don’t want to get left behind,” he said. “Technology is a huge part of policing, and these changes will take us into the next generation.”
The department expects to complete all upgrades before the end of the 10-year contract.
