The No. 9 ranked Illinois State hosted No. 25 Youngstown State for their homecoming game this past Saturday. Youngstown came out on top 40-35 in the back-and-forth battle.

The Redbirds had a 21-12 lead but YSU quarterback Beau Brunsgard connected with Mike Solomon down the sideline to cut the ISU lead to two. ISU was quick to answer back with Victor Dawson bringing the Redbirds inside the Penguin 20-yard line. Quarterback Tommy Rittenhouse then connected with Luke Mailander for another touchdown to bring the ISU lead back up to 28-19.

Brunsgard fought back with a touchdown of his own to bring the Penguins within another two point margin. Rittenhouse looked to connect with Mailander again on a deep ball but was intercepted by DJ Harris.

“That last one just yeah driving down the field in the redzone area… Another forced ball…bad placement guy made a play,” said Rittenhouse. “Yeah… Just not a…not a good performance by me.”

The Penguins took advantage of the turnover on their next possession. Fresh Walters got past the ISU secondary for a 53-yard touchdown. The YSU defense kept the momentum going with a sack on Rittenhouse during the next ISU drive.

Brunsgard sealed the day for the Penguins with a 48-yard touchdown. A five touchdown performance by the quarterback earned him Payer of the Game. ISU Head Coach Brock Spack spoke on Brunsgard’s performance.

“He would scramble…keep himself alive.. Dump the ball or pull it down and make a first down on a run so. He’s exactly what we saw on tape so wasn’t really any surprise.”

ISU looks to get back in the win column on the road this Saturday against No. 22 South Dakota State.
