Six local businesses were fined for selling alcohol to underage customers.
Hacienda Leon Restaurant was fined the most out of the six businesses with this being their third offense.
The first time offenders were Diamond’s, Debbie’s, and Clarion Point Hotel. Repeat offenders were uptown locations more popular with students.
Heaterz Hot Chicken and the Bloomington Normal Marriot Hotel were both fined five-hundred dollars.
Fines are issued by the Liquor Commission and get higher with each offense.
The Normal Police Department worked with underage individuals to find out which local establishments were not following protocol on alcohol distribution. The Police Department’s main concern was to keep students safe, stressing that underage alcohol consumption contributes to spikes in fights, sexual assaults, and DUI’s.
“It comes down to safety we don’t want a business to provide alcohol to underagers that may not kjnow how to handle alcohol make poor choices and safety is really the main goal,” said Brad Park, a member of the Normal Police Department.
