2:32Inside BSU’s Black Heritage Ball: Creating Joy, Community and Belonging | Rooted in RedThe Black Student Union transformed its annual Black Heritage Ball into a celebration of culture, storytelling, and community during Black History Month.Inspired by the film Sinners, this year’s theme drew from the symbolism of the juke joint, a space representing freedom, exploration, and joy. Special Events Co-Coordinator and junior marketing major Noah Collins said the ball is meant to create “a space for happiness, joy, love, and being Black on campus.”For Special Events Co-Coordinator and junior sociology major Paris Cumberlander, the event offers something deeper: a place where students do not have to shrink themselves. “We can just be ourselves and have fun,” she said.Through music, performances, guest speakers, and intentional design, the Black Heritage Ball continues to create belonging and connection for Black students at Illinois State University.
